LOCAL ATTRACTIONS

Crofters Pub and Restaurant with its 11 bedroom Lodge is a short drive from Barrow in Furness town centre. With the shores of Lake Windermere around a half hour drive away and the tourist attractions of Bowness on Windermere , Windermere town itself , Ambleside and Grasmere further on up the east side of the lake we are very popular with those wishing to visit the Lake District. Bowness is the main tourist town of the South Lakes and is the home of the World of Beatrix Potter Attraction, whilst Grasmere is home to the William Wordsworth Museum. Here you can also catch the Steamers and Ferries to travel up and down Lake Windermere. In Ambleside you can find Beatrix Potter’s House as well as the Beatrix Potter Gallery. With the smaller Lakeland villages of Coniston and Hawkshead also close by, Crofters is an ideal base to explore the southern area of the Lake District National Park with its breathtaking scenery, mountains, lakes and fells.

Barrow itself is home to Furness Abbey which is a former Catholic monastery dating back to 1123 and once the second wealthiest and most powerful Cistercian monastery in the country. A short drive away from Crofters is Roa Island with  its causeway and spectacular views out towards the ruins of Piel Castle on Piel Island, as well as Walney Channel and Morecambe Bay. There are some lovely walks to be had along the shores of Morecambe Bay. The coastal road along these shores  will take you to the Market Town of Ulverston which was the birth place of Stan Laurel  of Laurel and Hardy fame. There is a small Museum dedicated to the Comedy Duo.

Just outside Ulverston is the Manjushri Kadampa Meditation Centre situated in Conishead Priory with its own modern Buddhist Temple. Back in Barrow The Dock Museum tells the history of Barrow in Furness focusing on its shipbuilding and steelworks industry, the latter of which Barrow once had the world’s largest. It also tells of the bombings of the town during World War II and of the history of the Furness Railway. On the other side of Walney channel where The Dock Museum is situated is Walney Island with views out towards the Isle of Man and Irish Sea. At the southern end of the island is the South Walney Nature Reserve , where you will find both lesser black backed gull and herring gull colonies as well as a grey seal colony.

A short drive from Crofters takes you to the South Lakes Safari Zoo which is home to over 1000 of the rarest and most endangered animals in unique natural environments which enable visitors to get up close to some of these amazing creatures. Wander among the Kangaroos , be a Zookeeper for the day or take part in animal feeding experiences ; there’s something for everyone.

Barrow in Furness with its wealth of wildlife, stunning walks, history and a stones throw from the Lake District National Park is great place to visit and Crofters with its accommodation , pub and restaurant provides you with the perfect base during your visit.
